On view together for the first time, Selections from the Tomayko Collection, brings together works from the personal collection of Jack Tomayko that together represent over 30 years of collecting. Artists hail from in and around the Pittsburgh region and span a wide range of mediums, subject matter, and generations. The diverse works on view here lend perspective to Pittsburgh's thriving cultural sector and creative community.

Artists include: Atticus Adams, David Aschkenas, Gavin Benjamin, Ron Bennett, Elizabeth Myers Castonguay, Ron Donoughe, Dan Droz, Carolyn Frischling, Fabrizio Gerbino, Janese Hexon, Christine Lorenz, Chris McGinnis, Clayton Merrell, Chuck Olson, Joyce Werwie Perry, Robert Qualters, Michele Randall, Mia Tarducci, and Kara Zupancic.

Two loose categories define the collection: Imagined landscapes/documented experiences, and examinations of movement and stillness.

Fascination with the natural world and human interference are major motifs that captivate both Clayton Merrell and Chris McGinnes. Rob Qualters, Mia Tarducci, Elizabeth Myers Castonguay, Michele Randall, and Chuck Olson seek to capture the beauty and energy in our surroundings and environment.

Documenting familiar scenes of the everyday preoccupies Ron Donoughe, Mark Perrott, Ed Panar, and David Aschkenas.

Movement is embodied in Joyce Werwie Perry’s The Dancers, andin Janese Hexon’s sculptures, which show her interest in body language and choreography. Carolyn Frischling and Ron Bennet emphasize the tactility of their mediums (bronze and ceramic), juxtaposing the density of the material with the willfulness of the carved object.

Conversely, Dan Droz, Christine Lorenz, and Atticus Adams, though varied in use of media, evoke a sense of stillness, as their subjects are stagnant, fixed, and unmoving. Benjamin and Gerbino’s figurative work similarly imply a fixity in time and space.
